Chyngton Primary School

PSHE

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education at Chyngton

At Chyngton, we believe that education should do more than prepare children for tests — it should prepare them for life. That’s why we have chosen to use 'Let's Talk' by Opening Young Minds as our framework for PSHE. Our PSHE curriculum is designed to equip every pupil, from Reception onwards, with the knowledge, skills and values they need to navigate life with confidence, compassion and resilience.

From the very start of their journey with us, children begin learning how to understand themselves, relate to others and make thoughtful decisions. Whether it’s learning how to build positive friendships, manage change, or stay healthy in body and mind, PSHE is central to helping children flourish both now and in the future.

Our curriculum has been carefully designed, ensuring that what we teach is relevant, engaging and rooted in real life. Each term, the whole school explores one of six key strands, building on prior learning in a way that deepens understanding and encourages personal growth.

We know that children who feel safe, valued and emotionally secure are better able to thrive academically. That’s why PSHE plays a vital role in creating a virtuous circle: promoting wellbeing, raising aspirations and unlocking potential.

Our PSHE programme includes the statutory Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), which helps children develop healthy, respectful relationships in all areas of life. It also teaches them how to seek help when they need it — an essential skill for safeguarding their wellbeing.

From Year 2 onwards, pupils begin journaling as part of their PSHE work. This supports emotional literacy, independence and self-regulation — tools they will carry with them throughout their lives.

The six strands of our PSHE curriculum are:

Building Resilience

Mental Wellbeing

Respectful Relationships

Relationships & Sex Education (RSE)

Health Education

Caring Friendships and Living in the Wider World

Through this rich and purposeful curriculum, we aim to raise pupils who are not only knowledgeable, but also thoughtful, kind, and ready to take their place in the world.

Careers Education at Chyngton – Opening Young Minds

At Chyngton, we believe it’s never too early for children to start thinking about their future. That’s why we use the Opening Young Minds careers curriculum — a carefully designed programme that helps children explore the world of work in a way that’s age-appropriate, inspiring and meaningful.

We want our pupils to understand the wide range of opportunities that exist beyond school and to see that their talents, interests and values can lead them in many directions. Through this curriculum, children learn about transferable skills such as communication, collaboration, creativity and problem solving — alongside more specific skills related to different jobs and industries.

By helping our pupils connect what they learn in the classroom with real-world possibilities, we aim to raise aspirations and open doors. Most importantly, we want every child at Chyngton to feel empowered to dream big and understand the skills they’ll need to shape their own path.
