 Reading Canon

At Chyngton Primary School, we’ve thoughtfully designed a rich and diverse reading canon that supports children’s learning and development from Reception to Year 6. Each book has been chosen to:

  • Build foundational knowledge of story structures, helping children understand narrative flow and character development.
  • Introduce high-quality texts filled with rich vocabulary to strengthen language skills and inspire a love of reading.
  • Expand cultural capital through stories reflecting significant historical, social, geographical, and diverse global themes — empowering children with a broader worldview.
  • Celebrate diversity by showcasing a range of voices, perspectives, and lived experiences, helping children see themselves in stories while developing empathy for others.
  • Engage and inspire by nurturing creativity, critical thinking, and imagination — supporting children’s writing and overall literacy development.

From timeless classics like The Three Little Pigs and Paddington to powerful, thought-provoking modern works such as The Boy at the Back of the Class and Pig Heart Boy, our collection ensures children explore a wide range of perspectives, genres, and ideas.

This canon is more than a booklist — it’s a pathway to lifelong curiosity, empathy, and confidence, helping every child feel represented and valued.
